This was one of those things I saw on the internet and thought ‘wow, I have to go there!’. As you will soon gather I end up doing a lot of this. Scrolling through Facebook I stumbled across an article about a secret infinity pool that was hidden in the hills of Snowdonia. It looked absolutely spectacular and I knew there and then that I needed to go.
What actually is it?
The structure itself was actually built as a renewable energy source, harnessing the power of the mountain stream it’s situated on. The positioning of it gives off the appearance of an infinity pool.
The author of the original article had decided, understandably so, to not give away the location. It has, in the past, been used as a party location with a lot of rubbish being left and locals being disturbed by the noise. As someone who loves and respects our National Parks the thought of this is horrifying!
How to find it?
In the original post, the author used Google Earth to do a little stalking of the location. This is the method I used! After trawling through pictures online I managed to identify some landmarks in the background which I matched up to satellite images on Google. I was pretty certain I knew the vague location of the pool. I didn’t want to rest there though. The next two hours of my life (seriously, I’m not even joking) were spent methodically tracking streams on Google Maps until I found what I was certain would be the pool. I had my location!
A week later I managed to convince a friend that we would be able to find the pool and so we headed off to Llanberis. From here I managed to navigate my way to some of the landmarks in the pictures. After quite a short climb where we followed one of the streams as close as possible, we actually arrived! The pool I had dreamt about for the past week!
The views were absolutely incredible and we had the entire place to ourselves. It has largely been untouched and should in my opinion remain so as this is what makes it so special! If you want to find it you’ll have to do some good detective work like I did. This was part of the reason that finding the pool was so rewarding. The water really is as clear and as blue as my photographs make it out to be. I was absolutely amazed at what we had found.
Swimming
Following a light lunch, our last activity before our descent was to go for a swim. Not sure if we were being brave or stupid! I would recommend if you are going to do this then please do it on a warm day because the water is VERY cold. I barely managed to dip my toes in! Don’t let the sunshine fool you.
The pool itself is quite small and there are many far better, wild swimming spots dotted across Snowdonia, but I am glad I managed to find and enjoy this one.
Leave No Trace
Heading away from the pool we made sure to pack away all of our rubbish from lunch (which in all honesty you should be doing on any hike!) and that we had left the place exactly as we found it. Any of you who manage to find it should make sure to do this, and to continue to keep the location a secret too. We are so lucky that this beautiful location is accessible right now. If we don’t look after it then it won’t be for much longer!
All in all, it’s a good little find! A true hidden gem and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
